Muitas pessoas não investem porque acham que investir requer realizar coisas muito complexas e difíceis de entender. Embora entender um mínimo de contabilidade e ter algumas noções sobre negócios seja importante, é quando tentamos fazer coisas complicadas que nos metemos em problemas. Em sua carta de 1989, Warren Buffett disse:
Tanto nos negócios quanto nos investimentos, geralmente é muito mais lucrativo simplesmente ficar com o mais fácil e óbvio do que resolver o difícil […] Temos feito melhor evitando dragões do que matando-os.
O que significa isto? As duas primeiras regras para investir em negócios ou em qualquer outra coisa são, 1) não perca dinheiro; e 2) não esqueça a regra número 1. E a forma certa de perder dinheiro é investindo em coisas que você não entende ou não tem capacidade de administrar.
É igual jogar tênis ou andar de kart. No tênis de amadores quem ganha normalmente é quem menos arrisca, pois é quem menos bolas joga na rede ou fora da pista. E se você já andou de kart talvez percebeu que o ganhador não é o corredor mais rápido, mas aquele que menos erros comete, especialmente ao tomar as curvas e não perder o controle do carro.
Nos investimentos é a mesma coisa: é muito mais importante escolhermos empresas fáceis de entender, que estejam dentro de nosso círculo de competência, do que tentarmos ganhar dinheiro em negócio potencialmente muito lucrativos mas que podem ser bombas-relógio. Para isso, devemos sempre estar cientes do que sabemos, do que não sabemos e tentar evitar negócios complexos ou com uma estrutura financeira muito complicada. Em palavras de Charlie Munger:
Tudo que eu quero saber é onde eu vou morrer para não ir lá.
Parece obvio, mas muitas pessoas correm riscos sem necessidade, investindo em negócios que não entendem ou que têm uma quantidade de dívida excessiva. Investir, como tantas outras coisas na vida, requer, antes de nada, evitarmos ser burros. O burro tenta ser mais esperto do que os profissionais, e tenta impressionar os outros com suas habilidade ou com as empresas complexas em que ele investe. O burro vai tentar matar um dragão, quando todo mundo sabe que é o dragão que vai matar o burro. O burro entra nas curvas acelerando ao máximo e acaba batendo o kart (eu fiz isso durante muito tempo).
Não é necessário ser sofisticado para ser um bom investidor. É muito mais inteligente ficarmos dentro de nosso (crescente) círculo de competência. É muito mais lucrativo no longo prazo limitar nosso risco. A final das contas, o simples e obvio da muito mais resultado do que o complexo e, principalmente, vai lhe permitir dormir mais tranquilo (a final das contas é para dormirmos mais tranquilos que investimos, certo?).
O seguinte parágrafo, escrito por Charlie Munger em uma de suas cartas aos investidores de Wesco, resume muito bem esta mensagem:
A Wesco continua tentando mais se beneficiar de sempre lembrar o óbvio do que de agarrar o esotérico… É notável quanta vantagem no longo prazo pessoas como nós têm obtido ao tentar ser consistentemente não-burros, em vez de tentar ser muito inteligentes. Deve haver alguma sabedoria no ditado: “São os nadadores fortes que se afogam”.
